Situated near Newmachar, seven miles north-west of Aberdeen, Bridgefoot is an 18 acre organic farm, producing vegetables and soft fruit.
Bridgefoot has been registered as organic since 1991. Since winning the ‘Producer-owned Box Scheme’ category at the National Organic Food Awards in 1998, we have concentrated our efforts on this service and now offer an all-year-round range of fresh & organic produce.

The hen feed is produced sustainably without chemicals and guaranteed GMO free. This feed, which comprises mixed organic cereals, soya, and lupins plus vitamins and minerals, is fed to the hens from birth.
The laying hens are free to range over organic land and supplement their nutrition by grazing herbs, grasses and insects.

Bridgefoot is farmed in accordance with the standards set by the Soil Association. We follow a five-year crop rotation in the main fields. Year 1 is establishing grass/clover, in year 2 the grass/clover is grazed by hens, followed by a year each of early brassicas (cauliflowers, broccoli etc), mixed vegetables (spinach, peas, courgettes) and roots (carrots, parsnips). We also have several poly-tunnels providing about 1600sq mts of protected growing. These tunnels enable us to extend the natural growing period and are particularly useful for growing salads throughout the year.
One of our main aims is to maintain the ‘local’ aspect to our business. We rent 5 acres at a nearby organic farm to grow vegetables such as leeks, main crop carrots, neeps, sprouts, cabbages, beetroot, kales, broccoli and cauliflower on a larger scale. Also we have the use of a walled garden close to Bridgefoot which has proven a great, sheltered spot for growing sweetcorn, beans, fennel, onions and salads.

Organic Farming by its very nature is very labour intensive. Plants need to be planted, seeds sown and there is always hand weeding to be done. When the growing is coupled with harvesting, weighing, packing and delivering, an organic farm needs a skilled team of dedicated workers. Bridgefoot is fortunate to have built up such a team. Bridgefoot has six permanent workers who are supplemented during busy periods by casual workers and students.
